The British Fashion Council has unveiled the nominees for this year’s Fashion Awards, and the popularity of Gucci shows no signs of slowing down.

The awards, which will take place on 10 December at the Royal Albert Hall, will celebrate the best of British and global fashion talent.

A voting body of 2,000 key members of the fashion industry, from 32 countries, have decided the nominations for the ten categories.

At the top of the pile alongside Gucci is Burberry, with three nominations under the new creative direction of Riccardo Tisci. Jonathan Anderson who heads up Loewe also features in three categories.

British Designer of the Year for Womenswear will be hotly contested. Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy, famed for designing Meghan Markle’s wedding dress, will be up against Victoria Beckham and Roksanda Ilinčić for ROKSANDA.

The Urban Luxe category sees cult brand Supreme take on Palace and Off-White. Londoner Adwoa Aboah will face Bella Hadid and Winnie Harlow in the Model of the Year category.

The star-studded ceremony at the end of the year will boast 4,000 guests, and is sure to look incredible as Swarovski is the principal partner of the event.

3-in-1 puffa jacket is designed to grow with your baby bump

Mums-to-be will love this clever ??65 pregnancy parka that GROWS with your bump Provider: Zip US In

The weather is already getting colder, which means now’s the time to start spending money on new snuggly coats.

If you’re pregnant, there’s one coat in particular that’s perfect for you.

Zip Us In’s 3 in 1 black longline padded puffa jacket has been designed so that it is super comfortable for pregnant women – and actually grows with the bump.

The jacket can be used during pregnancy, when babywearing and also after, as it has a removable panel which can be adjusted for fit around your growing belly during pregnancy.

Mums-to-be will love this clever ??65 pregnancy parka that GROWS with your bump Provider: Instagram/zipusin

(Picture: Zip Us In)

It also has an opening at the top of the coat for new mums, which enables you to fasten the jacket around your baby in a carrier, wrap or sling.

And when you’re no longer requiring a babywearing coat, all you have to do is remove the panel for continued wear.

It’s a great idea, isn’t it?

Mums-to-be will love this clever ??65 pregnancy parka that GROWS with your bump Provider: Zip US In

(Picture: Zip Us In)

Considering how many transformations the coat has, it’s really not all that expensive, at £85.

The coat is fully lined and features lower zip pockets, a faux fur trimmed hood and three toggles, and it’s available in black.

It comes in a shorter style too, which is cheaper, costing £65.

Sure, pregnancy coats aren’t new – there’s heaps of items that fall under maternitywear.

But, not all coats are created for every stage of pregnancy and becoming a new mother – and for the price, we think it’s a pretty cool creation.

All-terrain, driverless Lego construction vehicle could be our future

Volvo Rottweiler

volvo rottweiler lego

The Volvo Rottweiler is an autonomous construction vehicle that can work in rough terrain. It’s equipped with a 3D printer that create the materials it uses to construct buildings. And it’s made of Lego bricks.

Vida András, a 27-year-old Romanian architect, designed the Rottweiler for a contest run by Lego Technic and Volvo Construction Equipment. Entrants were invited to imagine the construction machines of the future by identifying tomorrow’s problems and creating a machine that will tackle them.

The Rottweiler took first prize out of 122 entries submitted from across the world. Lego most recently teamed up with Volvo Construction Equipment for the Zeux, a self-driving concept wheel loader released by Lego Technic in 2018.

The imposing Rottweiler measures 80x60x80 centimeters and takes 3,100 Lego bricks to build. With its four legs and detachable head, it looks more like it escaped from a sci-fi movie than a building site. That’s no accident. The judges were looking for futuristic designs, and András wanted to create something that evoked power and functionality.

‘The strength of it and the usefulness of it appeals to me the most,’ he said.

The Rottweiler and nine other contest entries are currently on display at London’s Transport Museum.

Solving tomorrow’s problems

While other industries have embraced 3D printing, András says it hasn’t been used to its full potential yet in construction. 3D printing could be used to experiment with new structure ideas and allow architects to design buildings using shapes that are ‘almost impossible to form by hand.’

The 3D printer is also key to the Rottweiler’s environment-conscious approach. ‘3D printing is a way of reducing the manufacturing waste,’ says András. He describes 3D printing as almost wasteless from source material to final product, adding that it could help reduce pollution from factories.

Volvo Icarus model

Runner-up James Cox of London created the Volvo Icarus, a mobile solar plant with off-road capabilities. It’s 100x60x40 centimeters and used about 4,000 Lego bricks. Cox says the name started out as a sort of joke — ’cause obviously I didn’t fly too close to the sun’ — but it suited his concept and sounded cool. So he kept it.

Like András, Cox wanted his entry to tackle the challenges posed by climate change.

‘Because the concept was to make a machine for the future, I thought if things aren’t environmentally friendly — if they’re not clean, if they’re not environmentally safe — they’re not going to work because fossil fuels will run out. Environmental standards are going to become stricter. We need a way around it, and it needs to be something that can work anywhere.’

Cox conceived the Icarus as a solar power generator. He then decided to make it mobile, adding the off-road chassis after he’d built the mechanics for the solar array.

András and Cox took the mechanical design process seriously, both emphasizing the research involved and the practical side of their work. Both started with a drawing, but then their approaches diverged.

András created the Rottweiler using a digital building tool. The design didn’t become a physical reality until he won the competition and Lego sent him the pieces required to create it. Meanwhile Cox worked freehand, building the Icarus with physical blocks. When he submitted his entry, he included a video of the mobile power plant in action.

‘A lot of entries are digital and they don’t actually exist and they don’t actually work,’ Cox says. ‘So I made sure that it had a video so you could see every single part that was listed. You could see it working.’

Volvo Rottweiler

Impressing the judges

It takes a lot to create a prize-winning Lego model: You need the imagination to tackle a design challenge. You need the practical knowledge to bring your vision to life. And you need the finished product to look amazing.

But there’s no such thing as a ‘typical’ Lego builder. Some entrants are professional design engineers or graphic designers, but that’s not always the case. One of the runner-up models is a carrier drone created by a 13-year-old.

This wasn’t the first rodeo for either András or Cox. Both designers have won and placed in previous Lego competitions and both have an idea of how to catch a judge’s eye.

András says he took on a big challenge with the Rottweiler. Instead of building a digger or a bulldozer, he used the Rottweiler’s detachable heads to make it a multipurpose machine. The ambitious approach paid off.

‘The secret to wow a Lego judge is try not to wow a Lego judge,’ András said. ‘The best thing you can do is … just construct what wows you. And if you have 100% confidence in your construction, I think it will reach its purpose and I think it will wow everybody if it wows you.’

He also has an idea of how he could take the concept further. He would like to add playability functions, perhaps actually making it drivable, making the arm movable or using a Lego Mindstorm computer to make it programmable.

Meanwhile, Cox had some practical advice for anyone who wants to get ahead in a Lego competition: Go big or go home.

‘It’s gotta look good. It’s gotta look impressive. And it’s gotta… just look big,’ he says. Yes, you can do something clever with a small design, but if it doesn’t look great, it just won’t have the same impact.

András was also proud of his creation’s appearance, describing the Rottweiler’s animalistic look as one of his favorite features.

Judges from Lego and Volvo evaluated the entries based on how well the models were built, how futuristic their functionalities were and how exciting they looked. Arvid Rinaldo, who works in brand communication and partnerships at Volvo Construction Equipment, highlighted the winning designs’ unique features and use of futuristic technology.

‘It’s almost like they come out of a science-fiction movie,’ he said. ‘It’s really inspiring for our engineers to see … what people from all over the world can do.’

The Rottweiler and Icarus concepts are now on display at the London Transport Museum alongside eight more futuristic Lego models. The Future:Build exhibit is open through May 16.

But here’s the deal: Some Walmart Black Friday prices are available now, as of Sunday, Nov. 18.

In fact, many key deals — including those $200 to $230 PS4 and Xbox One bundles — are also available at Target, Best Buy and GameStop, too.

Scroll down to see a few of our favorite Walmart Black Friday deals, starting off with the ones available now — and check out more deals in the slideshow below

Walmart Black Friday sale prices available now

PlayStation 4 Slim 1TB with Spider-Man, $200 (save $160)

Aloysius Low/CNET

The PlayStation 4 is a great all-round console and Spider-Man is one of the best big-budget games released this year. This isn’t the PS4 Pro. of course, but for the price, it’s a great all-in-one PlayStation starter package with $100 off the hardware, and one of the year’s best games (and a PS4 exclusive) thrown in for free.

$199.00 at Walmart Spider-Man review

Xbox One S 1TB Minecraft Creators Bundle, $200 (save $100)

Sarah Tew/CNET

Like the PlayStation 4 deal above, this isn’t the more powerful Xbox One X, but it’s still a great price, especially if you have kids obsessed with Minecraft. And you can sign up for Xbox Game Pass for $1 now through Jan. 3, too.

$200.00 at Walmart Xbox One S review

Walmart Black Friday deals available starting Wed., Nov. 21

2018 iPad, $250 (save $80)

Sarah Tew/CNET

This deal will be widely available during Black Friday week, but Walmart will have the 2018 iPad on sale first — a great price for a great gift.

$250.00 at Walmart iPad review

That price is not a misprint

65-inch 4K smart Roku TV: $398

Sarah Tew/CNET

This is an insane price on a big TV with Roku, the best smart TV system CNET has ever tested. Walmart’s ad says the TV is either the TCL 65S4 or the Sharp LC‑65Q7300U. We haven’t reviewed either model directly, but TCL tells us it has ‘similar form and function’ to the S405 we reviewed in 2017 (pictured), which costs roughly $350 more at 65 inches.

See at Walmart Read CNET’s S405 review

Cheapest. 40-inch TV. Ever.

40-inch Hisense 1080p TV: $99

Walmart

Neither have we reviewed this Hisense (model 40EU3000), but we’re guessing its image quality is on the bottom end of ‘acceptable,’ at best. But this is the lowest price we’ve ever seen for a 40-inch TV. Just last year we were excited about 32-inch TVs for $99. Insanity.

iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus: $400 gift card

Sarah Tew/CNET

From the cheapest TV to the most expensive iPhones…of last year. You’ll pay full price for the iPhone X, iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, but a $400 gift card (that’s four Insignia 40-inch TVs!) is hard to pass up if you’re a frequent Walmart shopper. You’ll need to activate through AT&T, Sprint or Verizon.

This deal is in-store only: Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. through Nov. 23. Schedule an activation appointment at 6 p.m. Activations begin at 8 p.m.

iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR: $300 gift card

Josh Miller/CNET

Wait, you want a new iPhone? That’ll cost you even more, and net a lower-value gift card. But if you get the cheaper XR ($750) it’s a solid deal and might be worth heading to Walmart to make it happen.

This deal is in-store only: Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. through Nov. 23. Schedule an activation appointment at 6 p.m. Activations begin at 8 p.m.

Samsung Galaxy S9, Note 9, S9 Plus, S8, S8 Plus: $300 gift card

Josh Miller/CNET

Similar deal where you have to pay full price in-store, but with a cheaper phone. The S9 from 2018 starts at $650, while the S8 models from 2017 are even cheaper. If you’re not wedded to the iPhone, these Samsungs are pretty sweet bargains with the gift card.

This deal is in-store only: Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. through Nov. 23. Schedule an activation appointment at 6 p.m. Activations begin at 8 p.m.

Google Home Hub, $99 (save $50)

That’s a whole 33 percent off the extremely handy Google Home Hub, which was just released. And it’s got no camera, so it’s a more comfortable bedroom and kitchen companion that other smart displays.

Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones, $99 (save $50)

The Bose SoundSport earphones are already reasonably priced, $50 off makes them well worth a look.

Retro Arcade Machine (Pac-Man or Galaga), $249 (save $50)

Sarah Tew/CNET

Who wouldn’t want an arcade machine in their house?

It’s only $50 off, but $249 isn’t too bad for Galaga! And Walmart had the exclusive on this Pac-Man machine, for some reason.

$249.00 at Walmart Arcade1up preview

Google Home Mini for $25 (half price)

Chris Monroe/CNET

Amazon doesn’t sell Google Assistant products because they directly compete with its Alexa-powered Echo speakers. And while this great half-price deal on the Google Home Mini is widely available almost everywhere else, it’ll be available earliest online at Walmart.

Roku Ultra for $48 (half price)

Sarah Tew/CNET

The highest-end Roku improves on our favorite 4K streamer, the Streaming Stick Plus, with a headphone jack on the remote, a remote finder and, new for 2018, JBL headphones, a $30 value. This price is also available at Target and elsewhere, but Walmart throws in a $35 credit for Sling TV, a $5 Vudu credit and one free month of Showtime, an $11 value, to get you to buy it there. Sometimes, the fashion industry leaves us feeling perplexed.

In fact, quite often – like last week, when Ksenia Schnaider showcased asymmetrical jeans with one straight cut leg and one wide leg.

Boohoo’s latest denim creation has left fans of the brand wondering if perhaps designers are running out of ideas.

Please welcome the utterly confusing ‘reverse jeans’.

Here’s how we imagine the idea was presented at Boohoo – someone from the company woke up early one morning, got dressed in the dark and put their jeans on inside-out.

In a rush, this fashionista popped her coat on before looking in the mirror, and didn’t notice her mistake. An hour later, she’s in a company meeting and to avoid embarrassment, decides to not only own the look, but also pitch it as the latest trend that customers will love.

Boohoo posted a photo of a model wearing the new mid-rise denim and proclaimed: ‘In case you missed the memo, reverse stitched jeans are now a thing!’

Yet, somehow, the style has not gone down well on social media.

This isn’t the first time Boohoo has committed a fashion faux pas; the retail company was accused of using padding on slim models for a plus size range in December last year and just a few days ago the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) launched an investigation into claims a Boohoo ‘Faux Fur Pom Pom Jumper’, which was advertised as faux fur, actually contains real fur.

Boohoo also isn’t actually the first to embrace the look, either.

As part of the ‘Unravel Project’ in redesigning classic outfits, Ben Taverniti released a pair of reverse mid-rise denim shorts, sold at Farfetch for just £375.

The phrase ‘to create something new, you must first destroy’ is scrawled on one of the pockets, so at least Taverniti made it clear what his mission was.

Another delight on the fashion retail site was the jeans with the random pair of tights attached to them, that we told you about in August, 2018.

If innovative and unusual fashion is your thing, you can order the reverse jeans in size 6-12 and they’re even on sale, having been reduced from £22.00 to £16.50.

Maybe the lack of popularity had something to do with it?

But, if the January purse strings are a little tight, you could just grab a pair of existing jeans in your wardrobe, turn them inside out and go with that.

Layoffs hit Verizon Media Group

Verizon is laying off 7 percent of its employees in its digital business as the phone company comes to grips with the hard realities of building a major media and advertising business to compete with Facebook and Google.

A spokesman for the company confirmed Wednesday that the company had laid off about 800 employees in its Verizon Media Business, formerly branded Oath. Verizon Media had a total of about 11,400 employees at the end of 2018.

‘These were difficult decisions, and we will ensure that our colleagues are treated with respect and fairness, and given the support they need,’ Guru Gowrappan, Verizon Media’s CEO, said in a letter to employees. ‘I want to be clear that we will continue to scale, launch new products and innovate. We are an important part of Verizon.’

He continued, ‘Now is the time to go on the offensive, go deep on our big priorities and do everything we can to advance the business.’

The layoffs come at a time when Verizon is struggling to make its transition from a wireless and broadband company into a media brand to create an alternative to digital advertising juggernauts Google and Facebook.

In 2017 it merged AOL and Yahoo into its business, creating the media division dubbed Oath. But the company admitted late last year that the assets weren’t as valuable as it had thought. The company announced in December it was writing down a $4.6 billion goodwill impairment in the fourth quarter as a result of the acquisitions.

Meanwhile, rivals AT&T and Comcast, which have bet big on their own media transformations are seeing their strategies take shape. AT&T spent $85 billion buying media giant Time Warner and also acquired satellite TV provider DirecTV to help distribute content. The company is betting heavily on the move to streaming services, having offered two options — DirecTV Now and AT&T Watch — on top of the various streaming services tied directly to core properties like HBO. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said he plans to launch another one this year

Comcast has also been building on its 2011 acquisition of NBC Universal. It also plans to introduce an NBCUniversal streaming service early next year

Success in Verizon’s media business is important given competition in its core wireless business continues to be fierce. The company has had to fend off assaults from smaller wireless companies T-Mobile and Sprint, which have been picking customers away from the bigger players.

The Verizon Media Group includes media properties, advertising and technology. In addition to Yahoo and AOL, it also includes properties, such as HuffPost and Tumblr.

‘Our goal is to create the best experiences for our consumers and the best platforms for our customers,’ a Verizon spokesperson said in an email to CNET. ‘Today marks a strategic step toward better execution of our plans for growth and innovation into the future.’

Nintendo Switch game deals: Save $20 to $25 on top titles

01-nintendo-labo-unboxing
03-mozilla-top-creepiest-tech-gifts-holidays-2018

The Nintendo Switch game console was without question one of the hottest gift items of 2018. Alas, the discounts on the system pretty much disappeared after Dec. 25, meaning you’re now stuck paying the $300 list price.

Correction: civilians will pay $300; Cheapskate readers can save $20. It’s not much, but it’s pretty much the best discount you’ll find anywhere. And see below for some unbeatable Switch game deals as well.

The console is being sold by Daily Steals via Facebook, and the purchase process is slightly different depending on whether you’re using a desktop browser or a mobile one (or the mobile Facebook app).

If you’re on desktop, you can get the Nintendo Switch in gray or red and blue for $279.99 shipped. That price is unlocked after five people ‘join’ the deal. (Remember Groupon in its early days? Same arrangement here.) Then the counter resets until five more people opt in.

I know: silly, and kind of a hassle, which is why it’s easier to do this via mobile (again, browser or Facebook app), where you can get that $279.99 price straight away, no five-person requirement. I don’t make the rules, folks, I just report the deals. 😄

Looking for some games to go with the Switch? Daily Steals — again via Facebook — has some great deals on some top titles, and here it doesn’t matter whether you’re on desktop or mobile. (The savings listed below are based on current prices at GameStop.)

Lego DC Super-Villains: $27.99 (save $25)

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: $34.99 (save $25)

Super Mario Odyssey: $34.99 (save $25)

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze: $34.99 (save $25)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: $39.99 (save $20)

Pokemon: Let’s Go (Pikachu or Eevee): $39.99 (save $20)

There’s also a game bundle worth considering, and this one doesn’t involve Facebook: MassGenie has Super Mario Bros. U and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle for $69.95, a savings of about $50.

Finally, how about some deals on Nintendo Labo Kits? Best Buy currently has the Variety Kit, Vehicle Kit and Robot Kit priced at $39.99 each, a savings of $20 to 30.

Microsoft Studios changes name to more fun-sounding Xbox Game Studios

Microsoft Studios got a small name change Tuesday to reflect the brand’s evolution ‘from its original roots.’

The new name, Xbox Game Studios, hints at the company’s ambitions to push the Xbox brand beyond its console origins. All of its first-party titles have hit PC in recent years and a game conference schedule indicated that it plans to bring Xbox Live support to iOS, Android and Nintendo Switch.

Xbox Game Studios is made up of 13 developers, some of which are responsible for major franchises such as Age of Empires, Forza, Gears of War, Halo and Minecraft, corporate vice president Matt Booty wrote in a blog post. These include:

The company got pretty aggressive in acquiring game studios in 2018, but Booty didn’t spill the beans on what the new additions are working on — some of them could be developing games for the Xbox One’s successor.

‘As a gaming organization, we have never been in a better position to deliver a diverse line-up of exclusive games for Xbox fans now, and in the future,’ he wrote.

Booty highlighted how its big upcoming titles, such as Crackdown 3 (which hits on Feb. 15) Gears 5, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps, will be available on Xbox One and PC (along with its Game Pass subscription service).
